About Echo

Echo Atlanta is neighbors sharing stories about the places we all know and live in. The idea is simple: you're walking down the street, you see an Echo sign, you call a number, you hear a story about that place. And then maybe you leave one of your own. Some of the stories are big and historic, some are small and personal, all of them are about Atlantans and the places where we live.

The original Gordon home

By Teri Stewart | 0:00:42

The home of the plantation that used to occupy most of what we know as the Lake Claire neighborhood stood where the Horizon School is now.

Transcript of the story

The original Gordon home stood until 1942, when it was torn down. It’s exactly where Horizon School is now. Interestingly enough, the curved driveway follows the original curved drive. The original school building is almost directly on top of where the original Southerland home was, and when I first moved here parts of the Southerland home were still there. There were still bricks, there were still front steps leading from Dekalb Avenue leading up in there, the old well was still there. One of the trees still survives, a very old Magnolia that’s in very poor health now.
